Ó£ÌÒÖ±²¥ Master of Science in engineering student Derek Hoyt of Ackley, Iowa, has been selected to receive a fellowship from the American Welding Society that potentially provides $75,000, or $25,000 per year, renewable for up to three years depending on progress.
The AWS Welding Research & Development Committee awarded one 2015 AWS Graduate Fellowship for Hoyt's research project on "Microwave Joining Using a Plasma-less, Closed-Loop, Triple-Heating Mechanism Process," co-advised by Drs. Yoni Adonyi and Seung Kim.
The AWS funds are to be used for his stipend, tuition, books, travel and other incidental needs, while LETU provides matching support in the form of in-kind contributions.
Derek Hoyt graduated with his Bachelor of Science degree in Engineering with Electrical Concentration from LETU in May 2014, when he was accepted for a Master of Science degree with Materials Joining Concentration. His thesis relates to complex electromagnetic wave-material interactions using a novel microwave joining system prototype developed at LETU (patent pending). The novelty of his research refers to three heating mechanisms, namely dielectric, hysteresis loss and eddy current when applied to metal-ceramic interfaces as well as alloying copper with carbon nanotubes.
"These national-level and competitive research awards are extremely rare," said LETU Dean of the School of Engineering Dr. Ron DeLap. "Derek's is the first graduate fellowship to be awarded to our LETU Master of Science in Engineering program, which is less than five years old. As time progresses, we anticipate more of these kinds of grants and distinctions will follow."
DeLap added that several of the other engineering graduate students from LETU's Master of Science in Engineering program have already shown great success, with two accepted into doctoral programs at University of Texas at El Paso and Cal Tech, both with full tuition waivers and stipends, as well as one accepted by the U.S. Navy for the Nuclear Officer Program, and another working to start his own business while another is employed in the oil industry with a six-figure starting salary.
"Any university would be proud of a track record like this," DeLap said. "It is unheard of for a new program to have these sorts of results."
